What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis can be described as being neither awake nor asleep but an inbetween state accompanied by a deep feeling of restfulness and relaxation. It is a naturally occuring state which we all enter at different times of the day, for example, have you ever been on the drive to work when it suddenly occurs to you that you've no recollection of the journey? That's an example of a trance state. It's like your conscious mind has switched off to 'take a break' and your unconscious mind is guiding you through what is essentially a day-to- day routine.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the utilization of hypnosis or 'the trance state' to treat an array of medical and psychological conditions. The conscious mind is the waking mind which deals with every day appraisal and decision making. It acts like a filter to the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is where all our learned behaviours and core belief are stored. Hypnotherapy enables us to simply bypass the conscious mind and allow us to deal with the root cause of the problem.

A simple example is where, an individual has a phobia of spiders. They have no idea why they have it, it's just there. It may be that during a childhood experience the individual had an unpleasant experience involving spiders and this was stored in the unconscious mind far away from conscious recollection as a future frame of reference. Therefore, the unconscious mind knows to avoid spiders in the future so, when an association with spiders occurs, the body reacts by becoming fearful. It becomes an unconscious defence mechanism that is irrational and, as the individual thinks and makes decisions using the conscious mind, they can't control this. As Hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious mind and communicates directly with the unconscious it becomes easy to place suggestions and new ideas in the sub-conscious thus solving the problem.
